Checking Criminal History in La Salle County
No one search answers every criminal-record question in La Salle County. Begin by naming the event: an incident, a booking, a filed prosecution, a fine-only citation, a statewide reported disposition, or a corrections status. Then collect a full legal name, spelling variants, an approximate date, and a cause, citation, booking, or incident number when one is known. Date of birth can help separate similar names, but an office may limit how it accepts or displays that identifier.
The direct route follows the custodian, not the person alone. A narrow request is also easier for staff to locate than a demand for every record tied to a name. Use these steps:
- Ask the combined County/District Clerk for a known felony or Class A or B misdemeanor case, and specify the court level.
- Call the issuing justice or municipal court for a fine-only citation, missed appearance, or related warrant question.
- Call the La Salle County Sheriff for current custody, then request the booking sheet or arrest material through the county records portal.
- Use the Texas DPS public name search for public conviction and deferred-adjudication data reported statewide.
- For your own full Texas review, follow the DPS fingerprint process and compare any disputed disposition with a certified clerk record.
A signed judgment is stronger proof of an outcome than a brief docket label. Older La Salle County records may require a manual index search and paper retrieval, so ask about search, copy, delivery, and certification costs before ordering.
La Salle County Courthouse Record Hub
Most formal local records lead to the La Salle County Courthouse at 101 Courthouse Square in Cotulla. The combined clerk records proceedings and judgments for the 81st and 218th District Courts, while its county-clerk role keeps County Court matters. The sheriff, probation contacts, and county offices are also centered at or listed through this hub. Ask for “district criminal” when seeking a felony file and “county criminal” for an assigned misdemeanor. That wording prevents a broad background-check request from reaching the wrong index.
The official La Salle County homepage shows the public identity of the courthouse and its offices.
The county screen is a starting directory, not a criminal-history database. Its value is routing a reader to the actual office that owns a file.
The combined County and District Clerk page describes the office that preserves La Salle County court proceedings, judgments, indexes, fines, and related records.
This clerk source confirms why felony, county misdemeanor, and fine-only court records cannot be treated as one undivided local search.
Texas Official Background Checks
Texas DPS offers two distinct routes. Its Criminal History Conviction Name Search is an account-and-credit public product focused on criminal-history information state law permits DPS to release, chiefly reported convictions and deferred adjudications. A name-based result is not fingerprint-confirmed. Similar names, reporting delays, and incomplete disposition matching can affect what appears, so compare an important result with the originating court.
A person reviewing their own Texas record should use DPS Individual Access and Review with fingerprints through FAST, delivered by IdentoGO. The personal-review service code in the research is 11FT12. DPS form CR-63 lists a $10 fingerprint capture charge and $15 criminal-history charge, while the live scheduler controls current locations and terms. No permanent La Salle County enrollment center was verified.
The FAST personal-review enrollment page is the official appointment starting point.
The enrollment screen supports a check of one’s own Texas history. It does not turn a county court search into a fingerprint service.
| Product | Identity basis | Best use | Access |
|---|---|---|---|
| DPS public search | Name and filters | Public reported Texas conviction and deferred data | Account and credits |
| DPS personal review | Fingerprints | Your own Texas criminal-history review | FAST appointment and DPS process |
| La Salle clerk file | Cause number or name index | One local prosecution and its disposition | Clerk request |
| FBI identity summary | Fingerprints | Your own FBI-held identity history | FBI or approved channeler |
Four La Salle County Record Stops
The sheriff, clerk, DPS, and TDCJ answer four different questions. The sheriff creates an incident or custody record. The clerk shows whether prosecutors filed a case and how the court resolved it. DPS compiles reportable Texas events sent by agencies. TDCJ shows state corrections status. A negative result at one stop does not erase what another custodian holds.

Federal records form a separate layer. La Salle County is assigned to the Southern District of Texas, Laredo Division. The PACER account gateway provides federal docket access under the current federal fee policy.
PACER can show a federal case docket, but it does not include La Salle County court files or sheriff bookings.
Criminal Record Types
La Salle County criminal records are created at different stages. The investigating agency writes the offense narrative. The sheriff creates intake, fingerprint, charge, bond, and release entries when a person enters county custody. A prosecutor files a complaint or information, or a grand jury returns an indictment. The clerk then indexes the public court case, docket events, orders, judgment, sentence, and costs.
- Incident reports: agency narratives, witnesses, evidence, and event facts, subject to active-case and privacy limits.
- Booking records: custody intake, charges, bond by charge, release, holds, and limited identity fields.
- Court files: charging instruments, docket events, pleas, orders, disposition, judgment, and sentence.
- Warrant records: process issued by the appropriate court and returned by the executing agency.
- Corrections and registry records: custody, parole, community supervision, or public registration data held under separate rules.
A warrant question should start with the issuing court and sheriff. No public La Salle County warrant database was found. A caller should have the citation, cause, or warrant number ready and should confirm recall or clearance with both offices because system updates can lag.
La Salle County Open Records Portal
The county’s Open Records Portal is the fallback when the sheriff or another executive-branch office holds a record that has no public database. It can be used for a focused request for an incident report, booking sheet, custody log, dispatch material, 911 audio, or other identified county record. Court case filings follow a different route and should go to the clerk.
A useful description names the department, record type, incident or case number if known, date and location, and desired format. Broad requests may lead to clarification or an estimate. The vendor portal uses an account-based records center for tracking. Anonymous filing was not confirmed, and the live form’s full fields were gated.
| Request detail | Format | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Requester contact | Name, email, phone | Receives notices and delivery |
| Department | Selection or text | Routes Sheriff, Jail, or other custodian |
| Record description | Long text | Defines event, dates, place, and record type |
| Date range | Date fields or text | Narrows the search |
| Delivery | Portal choice | Requests electronic files, inspection, or copies if offered |
Current sheriff copy charges, certification prices, and a promised turnaround were not published. Ask for an itemized estimate before accepting costs.
Inside a La Salle County Criminal Record
Read each result in the context of its source. A booking entry can show an intake charge before prosecutor review. A court file can show a later amended charge and final judgment. DPS may receive that disposition after the clerk enters it. Matching by cause number, court, filing date, charge statute, and signed order reduces the risk of combining different events or people.
| Name and identifiers | Legal name, aliases, and limited demographic or agency identifiers where public. |
|---|---|
| Arrest and booking | Intake time, agency, charge, warrant, bond, release, and custody status. |
| Charges and statutes | Complaint, information, or indictment details with offense level. |
| Disposition | Dismissal, acquittal, deferred adjudication, conviction, or other recorded outcome. |
| Sentence | Custody, fine, restitution, and community-supervision terms in the judgment. |
| Custody or supervision | County jail, TDCJ, probation, parole, or release information from the proper custodian. |
Disposition terms are not interchangeable. A dismissal ends a charge without conviction but does not by itself erase booking records. Deferred adjudication places a person on community supervision without an immediate conviction judgment. Expunction and nondisclosure require separate legal analysis.
La Salle County Booking Versus Court Records
Timing explains many apparent conflicts. The jail records custody first. Prosecutors may decline, reduce, or change a charge after intake. The clerk’s case begins when a charging instrument is filed, and the final result may arrive later. DPS completes the statewide arrest cycle only after agencies report and match the disposition. A missing outcome in a public name result can therefore coexist with a completed La Salle County judgment.
- Booking
- The administrative intake record created after a person enters custody.
- Charge
- An accusation stated by an agency or prosecutor, not proof of guilt.
- Disposition
- The court’s recorded outcome for a charge or case.
- Deferred adjudication
- Community supervision after a plea without an immediate conviction judgment.
- Certified judgment
- A clerk-certified court order documenting the official adjudication and sentence.
For recent custody procedures, use the dedicated La Salle County arrest lookup. For the filed accusation and judgment, move to the court record.
Public Access Laws in Texas
The Texas Public Information Act governs many sheriff and executive-branch records, but it does not make every criminal-history item public. Government Code Chapter 411 protects criminal-history information except where release is authorized. Filed court records are requested from the clerk under court-record access law, while administrative judicial records use Rule 12 procedures. Ask for segregable public portions when confidential details can be redacted.
Key statutes and rules:
Government Code Chapter 552 requires prompt access to public information, subject to exceptions.
Government Code Chapter 411 limits dissemination of criminal-history information and defines DPS public access.
Code of Criminal Procedure Chapter 55A governs qualifying expunction proceedings.
Family Code Chapter 58 sets separate juvenile-record rules.
The common “ten business days” statement is often misunderstood. Section 552.221 requires prompt production, while ten business days generally concerns an agency seeking an Attorney General ruling to withhold information. It is not a guaranteed production date.
La Salle County Justice Court Records
Four justice courts keep fine-only matters and perform magistrate or warrant functions. JP1 is at 212 Center Street in Cotulla, JP2 is at 502 Nopal Street in Encinal, JP3 is at 513 Martinez Street in Cotulla, and JP4 uses a Fowlerton post-office box. These files do not automatically appear in the combined clerk’s county or district criminal index.
Before an appearance, the county guidance tells citation holders to call the named court, confirm that the citation has been filed, and have a driver-license or citation number ready. A failure to appear can produce another charge and affect driver-license renewal. Payment status is not the same as a signed disposition or warrant recall, so request written confirmation when the distinction matters.
JP1 also advertises a new youth diversion program, but the official page did not expose its eligibility rules or record consequences. Families should ask JP1 about current requirements rather than assume that participation prevents a filing or clears an existing record.
Note: Court geography alone does not identify the custodian; the court printed on the citation or cause record controls the request.
Sealed, Expunged, and Restricted Records
Texas expunction and an order of nondisclosure do different work. Chapter 55A expunction can direct qualifying arrest records to be destroyed or removed. Nondisclosure restricts public release of qualifying criminal-history information while preserving access for agencies and entities named by law. Eligibility depends on the arrest episode, outcome, waiting periods, other charges, offense history, and statutory exclusions.
La Salle County filers can start with the combined County/District Clerk and request the current packet, cause-number practice, filing and notice charges, service list, accepted payment, and setting procedure. The clerk site publishes “Expunction Service Parties,” a useful local resource because a petition and order must identify agencies that hold the record. Older forms citing former Chapter 55 may be stale after the 2025 recodification.
Juvenile sealing follows Family Code Chapter 58 instead of adult Chapter 55A. Victim details, Social Security numbers, financial identifiers, sealed items, and protected investigation material can remain unavailable even when the rest of a file is open.
La Salle County Custody Record Layers
No official public La Salle County jail roster, booking blotter, or sheriff app was verified. Current-custody questions therefore begin with the sheriff at (830) 879-3044. Ask whether the person was booked, released, transferred, or held for another agency, then use the records portal for documentation. Do not treat silence or an absent web result as proof of release.
State custody belongs to TDCJ, not the county jail. Parole decisions are made by the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles, while the TDCJ Parole Division supervises people released on parole or mandatory supervision. The Board of Pardons and Paroles page describes that decision layer.
The board source should be read beside the judgment and TDCJ status, since a parole decision is not a county court disposition.
The TDCJ Parole Division page explains the supervision side.
This division record concerns state supervision after release, not local probation records held through La Salle County CSCD and the court file.
La Salle County Criminal Records by City
La Salle County has exactly two incorporated cities. Cotulla is the county seat and the main courthouse center. Encinal has a city police department and municipal record custodian, plus a separate JP2 office. City reports and fine-only cases may remain with those local offices, while felonies, county misdemeanors, county booking, and statewide reported history move through different custodians.
Cotulla Criminal Records
2024 estimate: 3,679. Start with the named city or justice court for citations and use the county hub for county-held files.
Encinal Criminal Records
2024 estimate: 547. City police, municipal court, and JP2 maintain distinct records channels.
Correcting a La Salle County DPS Record
When a DPS result lacks a La Salle County disposition or shows a mismatch, first obtain the clerk’s signed judgment or order. Then request your own fingerprint-based DPS review, compare the arrest cycle and identifiers, and use the DPS challenge process with the supporting certified document. Name search results alone are a weak basis for correction because they do not establish fingerprint identity.
Crime totals require similar care. Small agencies may have missing or suppressed reporting years, and county population can include incarcerated residents. The DPS Crime in Texas source is the official publication gateway, but no reproducible La Salle agency count was established in the research.
The statistics screen should be filtered by exact agency and complete reporting year. It must not be used to fill a gap with an unsupported county trend.
Federal custody also sits outside DPS and TDCJ. The Federal Bureau of Prisons Inmate Locator covers federal custody and release information.
A federal locator match does not replace the Southern District docket, and neither source supplies the La Salle County booking file.
